A look behind the scenes of Gallery A d K living art;
an interview with the gallery dealer Ada de Koning.

A good gallery develops interest in the work of an artist and spreads this interest among a group of collectors, collections and museums. In addition, as a gallery you must have a good organization. Appointments must be made and kept as self-evident, by all parties concerned.

In my case the gallery and gallery-dealer are one; anyhow, in my practice they are inseparable. I also show myself in the choices I make, in the manner in which I organize things. I will not show work which does not fascinate me. When I am truly enthousiastic, I can share my feelings with all sorts of different individuals; I can then bring forth what is dormant in the work.

A certain amount of balance is required. On the one hand you are a business-enterprise and must make sober decisions and see to it the calculations match at the conclusion of the trip. On the other hand you must likewise understand that art cannot be accounted for in all of its manifestations; we are dealing wiht something irrational, with a message, meanings, with thoughts not directly reducible to words or numbers. The cool businesslike attitude which I need when organizin, I turn off when selecting new artists. I am then much more concerned with the feeling, the mystery, that something in the work touches me. I strive to exhibit work which reveals the irrational; naturally, it is something different each time, one time a story, another time a thought or feeling. For artists who have something to tell and can move me, I reserve a spot where they can tell their story. My gallery as soap-box.

With regard to art, I am not that interested in a one-time occurence. Fascinating are the developments in the work of an artist; I think it is important to trace such progress; and that after one, two or three years you make a new exhibition, with the same artist, showing his development. When meetin an artist for the first time, I have this in mind; I do not select, for once and for all a number of works, but try to estimate the possibilities of development, so that after several years the work remains interesting, for me, as well my clients. The dedication and input of the artist are here important.
